In Iran wordt leiderschap uitgeoefend in een klimaat waarin politieke repressie en sociale controle voortdurend aanwezig zijn. Het regime stuurt op gehoorzaamheid en onderdrukking, terwijl burgers balanceren tussen zelfbehoud en het verlangen naar verandering. Angst is niet slechts een emotie, maar een systeem \u2014 ingebed in wetten, instituties en zelfs in de sociale omgang. Deze angst wordt zorgvuldig onderhouden: via propaganda, via zichtbare straffen voor wie afwijkt, en via subtiele vormen van sociale druk die mensen eraan herinneren dat afwijking gevaarlijk is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wie in zo\u2019n context leiding wil geven, kan zich niet beperken tot strategische keuzes. Elke stap is ook een morele keuze. Spreken betekent risico lopen: voor jezelf, je familie, je medewerkers. Zwijgen kan betekenen dat je, bewust of onbewust, bijdraagt aan het in stand houden van onrecht. Het politieke klimaat dwingt leiders tot een voortdurend balanceren tussen veiligheid en integriteit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leadership in Iran is therefore characterized by a sharp tension between speaking and remaining silent. At times, a carefully chosen silence is a necessary tactic to protect people or to preserve room for influence behind the scenes. At other times, it is precisely the courage to speak out that sets the course and invites others to raise their voices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
De moed om te leiden in de schaduw van angst vraagt om diepe verbinding met waarden. Het vraagt om het vermogen om risico\u2019s bewust te nemen, op een manier die rekening houdt met de kwetsbaarheid van anderen. In zo\u2019n klimaat wordt leiderschap vaak niet gemeten aan zichtbare prestaties, maar aan stille volharding: het vermogen om koers te houden, anderen te beschermen en toch het vuur van hoop brandend te houden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Toch laten vele Irani\u00ebrs zien dat leiderschap mogelijk is, zelfs in deze omstandigheden. In kleine daden van verzet, in het beschermen van elkaar, in het vasthouden aan waarheid ondanks het gevaar. Een leraar die zijn leerlingen leert kritisch te denken, ook al mag dat officieel niet. Een journalist die, onder schuilnaam, verhalen naar buiten brengt. Een groep buren die samenkomt om een familie te ondersteunen waarvan een lid gevangen is genomen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
These small acts are threads in a larger fabric of resistance. They are often invisible in statistics or news reports, but they form the breeding ground for change. Leadership here takes on a modest, everyday form: people who, despite everything, choose to remain human and to see one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From a psychodynamic perspective, it is important to understand how chronic fear affects relationships and decision-making. Fear can isolate: people do not dare to trust one another for fear that their words will be used against them. Distrust becomes a survival mechanism, but at the same time undermines cooperation and community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
That same fear can also lead to strong loyalty among those who share risks. Those who face danger together often develop a deep sense of connection. A leader in such a context must therefore be not only strategic, but also emotionally skilled: carefully calibrating closeness and distance, and learning to read which signals are safe to respond to and which are not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
From a systemic point of view, there is something else at play: the international dimension. What happens inside Iran is influenced by diplomatic pressure, economic sanctions, and the way foreign media present the story. Leaders in Iran therefore navigate not only internal power structures, but also the complex field of international interests and image-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The interaction between domestic and external forces makes the space for leadership unpredictable. Sometimes international attention temporarily opens a window for change; sometimes that same attention leads to increased repression. Leadership here requires the ability to read these shifting patterns and to carefully time one\u2019s actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The question remains: how long can a society continue to exist in this balance of fear and hope? History shows that even the most oppressive systems can develop cracks, often at moments no one had anticipated. The leaders working in the shadows prepare their communities for such moments: they build networks of trust, ensure the sharing of knowledge, and nurture the conviction that change is possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Leiderschap in Iran is daarmee zowel overlevingskunst als toekomstbouw. Het vraagt om de moed om in het nu stand te houden, en tegelijk te investeren in een toekomst die misschien pas jaren later werkelijkheid wordt. Het is de keuze om, ondanks alles, mens te blijven \u2014 en anderen te helpen dat ook te doen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
